"Bear Island: The War at Sugar Point" is an epic poem by Gerald Vizenor that illuminates the 1898 battle at Sugar Point in Minnesota. This battle, fought between the Pillagers of the Leech Lake Reservation and U.S. soldiers, marked a significant turning point in the relations between the government and Native Americans. Although out-numbered by more than three to one, the Pillager fighters won convincingly, showcasing the resilience and strength of the Anishinaabe people. The poem, drawing on traditional Anishinaabe storytelling, weaves together myth, memory, legend, and history, bringing to light a key moment in Minnesota's history with clarity and emotional resonance. Gerald Vizenor, a professor of American studies at the University of New Mexico and a member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe, White Earth Reservation, is recognized for his thoughtful portrayal of modern American Indian life.
