Publisher: A Del Rey Book - Ballantine Books 1986 First Edition

Nerilka's Story is a science fiction novella by the American-Irish author Anne McCaffrey. Nerilka's Story became the eighth book in the Dragonriders of Pern volume series.Taking a different approach from previous books in the eight volume series, Nerilka's Story has a non-dragonrider and non-harper as its major viewpoint character. It is set during the events detailed in Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern. Nerilka is the daughter of a Lord Holder who turns her back on her own life of luxury and sets out to fight the disease that threatens to kill all humans on Pern. According to a critic for the Chicago Tribune, Nerilka makes for an "intelligent, resourceful, selfless and, alas, homely" heroine.

The Lady Caissa, heir to the Ambassador of the Federated Sentient Planets to the world Demeathorn, had grown up knowing that she owed her sire obedience and unconditional loyalty. She was expected to do her duty, even to the extent of entering into a marriage alliance she did not understand with a man she despised. Lady Caissa, beautiful, rich, and well-educated, had never learned the great secret of Demeathorn, although she was about to be caught in its spell. In the aftermath of disastrous diplomatic negotiations, she fled north toward interdicted territory. A distress signal from deep within the forbidden zone drew her to a rocky island where she would encounter a man alone: intense, handsome, and severely injured in the crash of his antique flyer. Lady Caissa did not know it, but she had just set in motion events which would determine the fate of her family, her planet...and her happiness.

The Dragon in the Sea by Frank Herbert 1956 HC/DJ Vintage Science Fiction ~ 1st Edition

The Dragon in the Sea (1956), also known as Under Pressure from its serialization, is a novel by Frank Herbert. It was first serialized in Astounding magazine from 1955 to 1956, then reworked and published as a book in 1956.

Set in a near-future earth, the West and the East have been at war for more than a decade, and resources are running thin. The West is stealing oil from the East with specialized nuclear submarines ("subtugs") that sneak into the underwater oil fields of the East to secretly pump out the oil and bring it back. Each manned by a crew of four, these submarines undertake the most hazardous, stressful mission conceivable, and of late, the missions have been failing, with the last twenty submarines simply disappearing.

In Tira Virte, art is prized for its beauty and as a binding legal record of everything from marriages to treaties. Yet not even the Grand Duke knows how extraordinary the Grijalva family's art is, for certain Grijalva males are born with the ability to alter events and influence people in the real world through that they paint. Always, their power has been used for Tira Virte. But now Sario Grijalva has learned to use his Gift in a whole new way. And when he begins to work his magic both the Grijalvas and Tira Virte may pay the price.

The Songs of Distant Earth HB –  1986 First Ed. by Arthur C. Clarke

The Songs of Distant Earth is a 1986 science fiction novel by Arthur C. Clarke based upon his 1958 short story of the same title.

The novel tells of a utopian human colony in the far future that is visited by travellers from a doomed Earth, as the Sun has gone nova. The Songs of Distant Earth explores both apocalyptic and utopian ideas, as well as the effects of long-term interstellar space travel and extra-terrestrial life.

The novel is set in the early 3800s and takes place almost entirely on the faraway oceanic planet of Thalassa. Thalassa has a small human population sent there by way of an embryonic seed pod, one of many sent out from Earth in an attempt to continue the human race before the Earth was destroyed.

Extract from Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven; 1909 Harper and Brothers

First published in Harper's Magazine in December 1907 and January 1908.
Released in 1909 by Harper's as a Christmas gift book. Extracts was the last book Mark Twain published during his lifetime. Outstanding book and one of  Mark Twain's more unusual works..Combining science fiction with a satiric look at conventional views of the afterlife.Captain Stormfield was inspired by Captain Edgar Wakeman, a sea captain whom Clemens met in 1866; Wakeman's eccentric character and personality made a tremendous impact on the young man, and he is the model for several Twain characters besides Stormfield; Wakeman's retelling of a dream he had in which he visited heaven was the source for the story.

Fiction, Fantasy, Afterlife, Sci Fi

Beautiful bright copy in red boards with blue and white pictorial cover of the Captain on his way.  Frontispiece behind tissue guard. Note copyright page. First Edition / First Printing
No code letters on copyright page.

(In my opinion, this has been read perhaps once or twice. Slightly bumped corners. Very minimal edge wear to ends of spine, if any. Also see only real issue, front end paper shows penciled gift inscription by ??) Interior clean, binding of pages sturdy.
