Abraham Lincoln In Decatur by Otto R. Kyle ~ 1st Ed. Signed Copy 1957

Published by Vantage Press, 1957

Hardcover; 176 pages

Here is a book that should be on the shelves of everyone interested in Lincolniana . . . for it brings
forward sidelights on the beloved President's life which have hitherto received scant notice. This is his
Decatur story, telling of his youthful coming, and his later dramatic return to that community.

Lincoln had lived in Macon County just a year, and although he never lived here again, he was found here often for court, to visit friends, and for political reasons. People in Decatur and Macon County remained strong supporters of Mr. Lincoln and he did not forget about Decatur after he sought his fortune a little further west, first in New Salem and then Springfield.

Near mint condition. No dust jacket. Light blue boards with black lettering on spine.  Signed by the author, Otto R. Kyle.

A textbook for High-School Students.

This is a wonderful book detailing the history of the United States of America. The author has done a great job putting this one together. There are pictures, cross-references, explanations, questions to consider, terms, supplementary readings, and topics for the reader to enhance their reading and learning experience. Many excellent black and white and colored maps. It is relatively easy reading.

This doesn't have to be for school--anyone who may have an interest in the history of the United States of America will find a lot of information and learn quite a bit. Nice work. Recommended reading for all citizens. Recommended book for all home libraries.

I can only see writing (small and in script) in appendix around birth, death and assassinations of President's). Looks like teacher, not student? Otherwise interior spotless and very nice. Tight and intact. Notice the covers show white smudges. Not able to discern what this is.

Indeed, the range of material contained in the Archives is immense. Of course, unique original documents like the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights are enshrined here, along with the Louisiana Purchase treaty, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, and the Homestead Act. So are presidential campaign buttons, illustrated family bibles, the passenger list for the Lusitania’s final voyage, patent drawings, and almost every government document of importance. Chesapeake is a novel by James A. Michener, published by Westminster, Maryland, U.S.A.: Random House Inc, in 1978. The story deals with several families living in the Chesapeake Bay area, from 1583 to 1978.

It starts in 1583 with American Indian tribes warring, moves through English settlers throughout the 17th century, slavery and tobacco growing, pirate attacks, the American Revolution and the Civil War, Emancipation and attempted assimilation, to the final major event being the Watergate scandal. The last voyage, a funeral, is in 1978.

Very good, very minor wear to spine edges and bumped corners. No dust jacket. Beautiful endpapers with maps. Dark green boards, flash looks more blue. Gold gilt illustration on cover and lettering on spine.  865 pages.

The Outer Banks of North Carolina, 1584-1958 by David Stick ~ University of North Carolina Press, 1981 Printing

The Outer Banks have long been of interest to geologists, historians, linguists, sportsmen, and beachcombers. This long series of low, narrow, sandy islands stretches along the North Carolina coast for more than 175 miles.

This is the fascinating story of the Banks and the Bankers; of whalers, stockmen, lifesavers, wreckers, boatmen, and fishermen; of the constantly changing inlets famous for channel bass fishing; and of the once thriving Diamond City that disappeared completely in a three-year period.

Jacket shows some wear to the edges and top of spine. See photos. Book is in Very good condition. Clean tight and bright.

The Oregon trail : sketches of prairie and Rocky Mountain life by Francis Parkman; Charles Henry James Douglas Macmillan, 1914.

The book is a breezy, first-person account of a 2 month summer tour in 1846 of the U.S. states of Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, and Kansas. Parkman was 23 at the time. The heart of the book covers the three weeks Parkman spent hunting buffalo with a band of Oglala Sioux.

The book was reviewed favorably by Herman Melville, although he complains that it demeaned American Indians and that its title was misleading (the book covers only the first third of the trail).

Indian Graphic on cover. Green cloth boards. Slightly bumped corners and spine ends. Good to Good +. 381 pages

Size 5.75 x 9.5-inches

A great read. Rather than piling statistic upon statistic, the author shows what California is by showing what America would not be without it.

Late 1960s vision of what would happen if "all the incredible world known as California was shaken by the greatest earthquake in history and vanished into the Pacific?" What would the rest of the nation be like without the Golden State?

Book Club Edition. Hardcover. Black cloth with gilt lettering to spine and insignia to front. Maps on red lining papers. Gently tanned text-block edges, deckle fore-edge, tight and clean copy with no markings of any kind.

Dust jacket intact, slightly worn to edges, chipping to spine, one small tear. Very Good / Good.

John Albert Johnson,  (1861–1909), American political leader, governor of Minnesota, b. St. Peter, Minn. The son of poor parents, he left school early and worked at various trades until 1887, when he became editor and half owner of the St. Peter Herald, a Democratic journal. His editorials brought him into public notice, and in 1898 he was elected state senator. In 1904 he was elected governor on the Democratic ticket in a Republican state that gave Theodore Roosevelt a two-to-one majority that year. Johnson's victory won him national fame, increased by his reelections in 1906 and 1908. His progressive administration, gracious personality, and talent for speaking made him one of Minnesota's most popular governors.

Johnson, the son of Swedish immigrants, was an extremely popular 3-term Democratic governor of Minnesota from 1904 to his untimely death in 1909. The book ends with a collection of tributes from important persons, including President Taft, Theodore Roosevelt (written from Central Africa while on safari), several governors, Andrew Carnegie, Archbishop Ireland, and others.

New Eclectic History of the United States 1881 & 1890 By M E Thalheimer ; American Book Co. Rare

The British force numbered 4, 000. The news of their approach caused a panic, and the raw, untrained militia, hurriedly gathered to oppose them, fled at the first fire. Such, says Hildreth, was the famous battle of Bladensburg, in which very few Americans had the honor to be either killed or wounded.
James Miller was born at Peterborough, New Hampshire, in 1776, and was educated for the profession of law: but entered the United States army in 1808 as major. His exploit at Lundys Lane won for him the rank of brevet brigadier-general, and a gold medal from Congress bearing the motto, I'11 try. Miller resigned his commission in 1819 to accept the governorship of Arkansas; he held this position six years, and was then made collector of the port at Salem, Mass. He died at Temple, N. H. , in 1851.
Commodore Thomas Mcdonough (1783-1825), was born in New Castle County, Delaware, and entered the navy when sixteen years of age. He was one of the officers of the Philadelphia, and afterwards assisted, under Decatur, in recapturing and burning his old vessel ( 359). His victory on Lake Champlain was rewarded by Congress with a gold medal. The State of Vermont presented him with a tract of land overlooking the scene of his victory.
General Alexander Macomb (1782-1841), a native of Detroit, was an officer of the United States army from his seventeenth year until his death. The battle of Plattsburgh was his greatest achievement, and won him a vote of thanks and a gold medal from Congress, as well as his brevet of major-general.
Commodore Stephen Decatur was the son of a naval officer of the Revolution, and was born at Sinnepuxent, Maryland, in 1779.

Very good to excellent for age. Slightly bumped corners. Leather spine with Gold gilt lettering. RARE

THE KINGDOM IN THE COUNTRY Hardcover – 1987 by James Conaway

Houghton Mifflin; 1st edition / 293 pages.  ISBN:0395377757
Full line number

Journalist Conaway spent six months traveling the millions of acres of public lands of the western United States. To come to terms with the "West as experience," he visited its inhabitants: ranchers, environmentalists, Native Americans, miners, marijuana growers, lumberjacks, and others who seek something of the frontier and the freedom of space or who flee restrictions. These vivid , colorful portraits effectively illustrate what he views as the "systematic diminishment" of the West far more eloquently than paeans to nature or diatribes against development. They also convey well the complexities of regulation, use, and misuse of these lands.

Light Wear and rubbing to jacket, some edgewear. Cloth covers are good, tiny bit of soiling to spine canal. Interior spotless.
